Now Aadhaar Made Mandatory for Mobile Connections

After income tax returns and PAN cards, the government will make it mandatory to produce an Aadhaar card for acquiring or maintaining a mobile connection. The department of telecom (DoT) on Friday issued directives to telecom operators to re-verify their subscribers — both prepaid and postpaid — through an Aadhaar-based eKYC process by February 6, 2018. This order follows the Supreme Court order of February 6, 2017 that Aadhaar-based eKYC verification should be done for all mobile phone numbers in the country.

Aadhar

The order issued by the DoT to telecom operators on Friday directs them to re-verify their customers on both prepaid and postpaid plans through an Aadhaar-based eKYC (know your customer) process by 6 February 2018. Any unverified mobile phone number, or any number not linked to Aadhaar, will be illegal after the mentioned date.

The Aadhaar-based e-KYC would also be mandatory for customers who are planning to get a new mobile connection. Operators have also been asked to send a confirmation verification code to it subscribers to ensure that SIM cards are physically available with the subscribers before initiating the e-KYC process.

The new order to connect mobile phone connections to Aadhaar comes shortly after the Supreme Court announced in February that all phone numbers in India should have verified users. Mobile phone operators have been asked to inform their customers through any means possible, including print and TV adverts as well as SMSes, about the new Supreme Court order on the re-verification process.

Cheers!!!
