Samsung Galaxy S8, S8+ Features: All You Need To Know
Samsung's has revamped its flagship lineup for the year 2017 with the launch of Galaxy S8 and S8+ smartphones. The premium smartphones boast of a new design along with a host of features and advancements. The attractive design and big screens are not the only big draws of the new Samsung flagships, as they also offer the Dual Pixel camera on the back, Bixby digital assistant, DeX desktop dock, among its array of new features.
In addition, Samsung has stressed that the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ will "usher in a new era of smartphone design and fantastic new services" from the company. Following are the features from the biggest smartphone by Samsung:
1. Refined look with no Home button:
Both the phones come with curved sides. The frame, or bezel, surrounding the display has been minimized. Samsung has ditched its signature home button design for the bezel-less design on the Galaxy S8. Samsung believes that removing the home button will help Galaxy S8 series to offer a more immersive viewing experience while will also make multi-tasking more convenient.
The horizontal strip at the bottom has made way for home button, which enters right inside the screen using pressure-sensitive hardware. Giving a premium finish to the device, there's Corning Glass 5 both at the front and bottom.
2. Top-of the-line processor with Qualcomm Snapdragon 835:
Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ are both powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 processor. The duo is the very first smartphones to come with Qualcomm's top-of-the-line processors. They are also the 'world's first 10nm processors'. The Galaxy S8 series will be powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor (2.35GHz quad-core + 1.7GHz quad-core) in US and some other markets.
However, in select markets including India, the company may launch the variant running on its in-house Exynos 8895 SoC. Samsung's Exynos 8895 SoC too is said to be 10nm processor.
3. Debuts Bixby:
Samsung's Bixby virtual assistant will be making its debut on the Galaxy S8. The company at the event confessed that the Bixby is still being developed and it was created to enhance the way users can interact with the Galaxy S8. Bixby will offer contextual information based on users' habits. The Galaxy S8 also comes with a dedicated hardware button for Bixby.
However, there's a catch, Bixby will so far work only with Samsung's selected apps, including the photo gallery and messages. Not all touch commands will have voice counterparts right away.
4. Gigabit-LTE capable:
The Galaxy S8 will be the first smartphone capable of gigabit LTE speeds to hit the markets. This is courtesy Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chip (which is exclusive to Samsung till April), it is the company's first chipset capable of gigabit speeds.
5. World’s first phones to get mobile HDR certification:
Samsung's new smartphones are claimed to be the first in the world to get mobile HDR certification from the UHD alliance.
6. Indefinite Display:
Both Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ have edge-to-edge curved displays, something that the company calls 'Infinity display'. Samsung claims the bezel-less, dual-edge display takes up more than 80% of the phone’s front screen. According to the company, display of the Galaxy S8 is 18% larger than the display of the Galaxy S7.
Samsung is also promoting the two phones' High Dynamic Range (HDR) Premium capabilities. The Infinity Display is said to be optimized for multi-window usability. The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ will also sport a new Snap Window feature that will enhance productivity by allowing users to pin a specific area from a recent app to the top of the screen, and continue using the area below it. Both the handsets sport a screen resolution of Quad HD+ (1440x2960 pixels).
7. New UX:
Samsung introduces an all-new UX with the two phones. Aimed to enhance user experience, the default wallpaper of the customizable Always On Display complements the color of the phone. There's also a new vertical swiping interface that aims to provide seamless navigation between the Home and App screens.
Samsung says that the all-new UX of the Galaxy S8 has been developed to enhance the user interactions. At the event, the company showcased that the Galaxy S8's app icons and typography incorporate the Galaxy S8's design language. Samsung has also updated brand sound "Over the Horizon" and ringtones with the all-new UX. The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ will also sport the now-standard Galaxy S-Series features including Always-On display.

The South Korean company at the New York event also announced the new Samsung DeX mobile-to-PC transition tool that can turn the Galaxy S8 into a desktop. It works similar to Microsoft's Continuum feature. The Samsung DeX tool will be compatible with the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+, and will offer users an Android-based desktop-like experience. Samsung Galaxy S8 users will have to plug the handset into the DeX Station, which will connect the handset to an HDMI compatible monitor as well as connect to any Bluetooth-enabled, USB, or RF-type keyboard and mouse.

The Galaxy S8 and S8+ sport 12-megapixel dual pixel technology with OIS (optical image stabilization) with f/1.7 aperture while there is an 8-megapixel auto-focus sensor at the front with f/1.7 aperture.
The dual-pixel sensor technology with wide aperture and auto-focus is said to perform better in low-light conditions. The camera UX is also claimed to optimize for one-handed operation. The front camera comes with facial recognition technology that can recognize and track faces to provide focused selfies. The camera app also includes wide variety of filters, animated stickers, and stamps.
