Remote Desktop Connection: How It Works

Some days when I was working in office, we came to a situation where we want to share the desktop. There is one feature provided by Microsoft which id Remote Desktop connection (RDC). Using this you can access others PC using his IP or Host name. This is mostly usable when you have to do some work on others PC without leaving your desk. But to let this happen there is some setthings that need to be enable.

To enable the Remote Desktop Connection, please follow the steps bellow:

1. Open Search box and type "System" in it and press the enter key.

2. You will see the System Information Screen. Now click on "Remote Settings".

3. When you click on Remote Settings, you will see a System Properties window.

4. Select the Remote tab.

5. Now, under the Remote Desktop, click and enable the setting which suits your need.

6. Click on Apply and OK.

You can see various options under the Remote Desktop. To know more about those options, see below information;

The following information will help you decide which setting to choose:
  • Select Don’t allow connections to this computer to prevent anyone from connecting to your computer using Remote Desktop or RemoteApp.
  • Select Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop to allow people using any version of Remote Desktop or RemoteApp to connect to your computer. This is a good choice if you don't know the version of Remote Desktop Connection that other people are using, but it is less secure than the third option.
  • Select Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication to allow people with computers running versions of Remote Desktop or RemoteApp with Network Level Authentication to connect to your computer. This is the most secure choice if you know that the people who will connect to your computer are running Windows 7 on their computers. (In Windows 7, Remote Desktop uses Network Level Authentication.)
1. Once this settings are done, click on the Remote Desktop Connection icon.

2. Click the icon in the upper-left corner of the Remote Desktop Connection dialog box, and then click About.

3. In the About Remote Desktop Connection dialog box, look for the phrase "Network Level Authentication supported."

4. Now run the RDC and enter the IP address or the Host name of the PC and click on the Connect button.

5. If the host PC's has an password to login, it will ask you the same. Enter the credentials and press Enter.

Wait for a while and that's it. You have got the access of the host PC. But make sure, when the PC is remotely access by you, the other person wont be able to access his PC until its remotely shared.

This same steps works for windows 8 also.

Cheers!!!
