Apple Launches iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus: Specification, Availability & Price
After so much peculation's and time, Apple has finally took the wrap off the much awaited iPhone 6S series in San Francisco on Wednesday. The new iPhones, named iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, are not lighter, thinner or bigger anymore. They instead feature a new display technology called 3D Touch, a derivative of the Force Touch technology used in Apple Watch.
According to Apple, 3D Touch will be able to differentiate between types of touches and taps in preloaded apps as well as on the home-screen. This new technology adds new functionalities to iPhones; for example, applying a little extra pressure on the screen may preview a photo in one app and open a file in another. 3D Touch will deliver information like time taken in the journey in the Maps app with a force-touch, while a light tap would only bring up the directions.
This display technology would also make it easier to navigate through apps; for example, you will be able to see all active apps with a long-press at the edge of the screen. For example, you can light press to preview content, while tap normally to go view it as usual. Or you can 3D Touch the Facebook icon on your home screen and post an update without having to open an app.
Both the new 4.7-inch HD screen iPhone 6S and the 5.5-inch Full HD Screen 6S Plus come with same design language seen in the previous generation device. The improvement of sturdier metal in both the devices increases the durability. Under the hood is the new 64-bit A9 chipset that is 70% faster in terms of CPU and GPU speeds, compared to A8. It is backed by M9 co-processor to take some load off the main processor. Similarly, the graphics processing will be 90% aided by a new graphics processor.
One of the biggest upgrades to iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus is in the cameras. After being stuck with an 8MP sensor since iPhone 4S, the new iPhones get 12MP cameras that can take panorama pictures going up to 63MP. The rear camera has also got 4K recording to capture high-resolution videos, a feature that has been available on iPhones since last year.
In terms of camera, Apple for the first time since iPhone 4S in 2011, has upgraded the camera from 8mp to 12mp with 4K video recording in the new iPhone 6S series. On the front too, they get much improved 5mp FaceTime snapper, compared to 1.2mp camera we see in the 2014 models. The front-camera also boasts Retina Flash which brighten the display three times the normal brightness so that the user's face get more light-shine while taking a selfie.
There can be one disappointment for user who are looking to buy 16GB as a base variant. The problem is that the iOS built-in and official app will take almost half of the storage giving very less space for user to install anything. Above that, if you are taking an video with 4K video on phone, then it will take only few minutes to cover the remaining space. So I personally assume that users will go for the 64GB or 128GB variant.
They also come with a new Touch ID fingerprint scanner that's twice as fast. The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are powered by a new A9 SoC, with M9 motion co-processor integrated into the chip, enabling always on 'Hey Siri' - you can now invoke Apple's virtual assistant without pressing any buttons.
The new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus come in four colours: Silver, Gold, Space Grey, and a new Rose Gold Aluminium finish, made from a custom alloy designed by Apple. The regions where the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will be available at launch are: Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Singapore, the UK and the US.
The price for the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus remain unchanged compared to their predecessors: $649 for the 16GB iPhone 6s, $749 for the 64GB iPhone 6s and 16GB iPhone 6s Plus, $849 for 128GB iPhone 6s and 64GB iPhone 6s Plus, and $949 for the 128GB iPhone 6s Plus (all US prices). There's no word yet on India price or launch date.
In terms of accessories, the new iPhone models will ship with new docks, leather and silicone covers. The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will come with iOS 9, which will become available to existing iOS devices on September 16.
Cheers!!!
