Nvidia's latest GeForce GTX 680 series
Nvidia has disclosed specs and features of the new and latest GeForce GTX 680 series of graphics cards, and it's a major update for the company as it transitions from Fermi to Kepler architecture. The flagship GPU, the GTX 680 is Nvidia's first chip to support Direct3D 11.1 and PCI Express 3.0, and has a max. TDP rating of 195W, compared to 244W on the GeForce GTX 580.
The stock 28nm card has 1,536 CUDA cores, 128 texture units, a core clock speed of 1006MHz, memory clock of 6008MHz, and 2GB of GDDR5 video memory, though manufacturers will offer their own overclocked solutions. It also manages to use less power than its Fermi predecessor (GeForce GTX 580). One key new feature is GPU Boost, which automatically adjusts the clock speed to turbocharge performance when you need it.
Designed to be more power efficient than it's predecessor, Nvidia says the GPU is like a middle weight boxer that fights like a heavy weight, with features such as GPU Boost, Adaptive Vertical Sync, and 60% improved performance at FXAA and TXAA antialiasing. The first batch of prices for the 680 series have been spotted at newegg at $500 and above. We'll keep our radar up more information on the GeForce GT 640 and GeForce GT 620 series, for now here's Ujesh Desai, VP of Corp. Marketing giving you the lowdown on all the features of the GTX 680.
