Samsung Galaxy Grand: Specification, Price & Review
Samsung are busy expanding their range of smartphones. Now they are making such phones which can be affordable by "Mango people" in India. After the success of Samsung Galaxy Note II and Samsung Camera this can be a huge success too. Samsung has officially unveiled its latest large-screen handset, the Android-powered mid-range Galaxy Grand.
The Galaxy Grand is Samsung’s attempt to make it available for people who cant afford top devices like Galaxy Note II. Now people dont have to rob a bank for bigger screen smartphone :) Galaxy Grand offers a massive 5" display with features like HD screen resolution and memory to reach that goal. Adding to this it is a dual sim version which is Grand DUOS. Now lets see what has phone has to offer us. Here’s a breakdown of the specifications to give you an idea how it compares with the closest competition.
Design:
Since its a 5" screen you will see that it looks similar to Note II or S3, but with slight difference. This phone has a rounded corner, which almost all Samsung phone has.
This phone has faux metal rim on the sides, and the tapered back which makes it comfortable to hold it in hand. The phone weighs 5.71 oz (162 g), a bit heavy, but can be considered after having a 5" display coz i dont think its heavy or bulky.
Display
You must be think why its WVGA on a 5' screen. Actually, it is 480 x 480 which means it has 187ppi pixel density. If you are using HD phone, believe me you will like this. For comparison, the 4.7” HD screen on the Nexus 4, which is not small by any measure either, rings in 318ppi. Comparing with other, Micromax Canvas has 294ppi whereas, Nexus 4, which is not small by any measure either, rings in 318ppi.
This phone uses LCD instead of AMOLED, which is well known for flagships, and combines deep blacks with saturated colors. Changing your mind? The 5” panel on the Grand DUOS is with decent viewing angles and bright enough. So if you standing under the Sun, you wont see what's on the screen. That can be one drawback of low density.
Interface and functionality
The phone runs on Android 4.1.2, which is definitely the best in terms of software and interface with a great option like Dual SIM. You can switch between the SIM's using the SIM Card Manager app in the settings, which helps you to go from one card to the other with a tap, while the phone supports dual standby mode as well.
Processor and memory
Galaxy Grand is powered by a Broadcom processor, not the Exynos chip. The BCM28155 SoC is a dual-core 1.2 GHz ARM Cortex-A9 fabrication with a homebrew VideoCore IV GPU, and the typical for A9s of yesteryear 40/45nm production method.
Samsung has placed 1 GB of RAM inside the phone, and 8 GB of internal memory, but there is a handy microSD slot for up to 64 GB memory cards as well.
Internet and connectivity
All the default Samsung WebKit browser sports handy functions like saving the page for offline reading and adjustable brightness from within the browser interface, but since we have Android 4.1.2 here, it offers no Adobe Flash support from the box, so you'd have to sideload it if needed.
Due to low density 187ppi pixel screen, it is a major drawback of viewing website.
The Grand DUOS can keep you connected with two carrier networks at once, and you can use up to 21 Mbps HSPA+ download speeds on one, for instance, and receive an incoming call from the other SIM card. The phone also houses a rich suite of other wireless connectivity options – Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, A-GPS with Glonass support, DLNA and FM Radio. After having all this, the only thing missing was the NFC.
Camera
Galaxy Grand comes with 8 MP camera, same as Note II. Along with it, it has LED flash and zero shutter lag. The camera interface is also well-known, and offers numerous scene presets, as well as a macro mode, plus various color effects to spice up your pics. Videos are recorded in 1080 definition with 30 frames per second, and the camera is fast in both modes. There’s LED flash and digital image stabilisation to help you take clear shots in low light.
Multimedia
The supporting Samsung's Nature UX music and video players in the Grand DUOS are equipped with rich number of equalizer presets, as well as the PopUp Play function, which detaches the video you are currently watching and pins it on the screen while you do something else around it. DivX/Xvid video format files are supported out of the box, too.
Battery
Galaxy Grand has a 2,100 mAh battery, just like the one it has for the Galaxy S III, providing decent amount of talk time in addition to other tasks such as media playback, web browsing, gaming and so on. We can say that it is good comparing to other smartphones.
Conclusion
Unlike other smartphones like Micromax Canvas offering only 512MB RAM, Grand is much more better than that in the same price. If you ready to keep the low density drawback feature aside, then just go for it. It offers a great dual core processor with 8MP of camera. After all having a phone with 5" display and dual SIM with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, its a must buy.
