Jolla: First SailFish OS Based Smartphone Launched
You must have heard about the Jolla smartphone. It’s based on the discontinued MeeGo Linux, includes a gesture-based user interface, and comes from the folks at Finnish company Jolla Mobile, which was founded by former Nokia execs. It was launched on November 27 by Jolla in partnership with Finnish telecom operator DNA. The phone was launched with a price tag of around 34,000 INR. For starters, it'll only be available unlocked for €399 (about $540) on or off contract from Finnish carrier DNA.
Since its the first launch and first phone you can expect that the cost can be a bit high. The phone is powered by a 1.4GHz dual-core Snapdragon 400 and has a 960x540 Gorilla Glass 2-protected display, but considering its deep-rooted ties with MeeGo OS, it's probably safe to say that it won't lack a fan base. The rest of the currently known specs include an 8-megapixel AutoFocus rear shooter with LED flash, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable storage, along with 4G LTE connectivity. The Jolla phone tips the scales at 141g and measures 131x68x9.9mm.
Apart from that, the phone comes up with a 4.5in IPS screen which has a qHD resolution (540x960). It's got the usual Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and A-GPS, plus 4G support and NFC. Jolla calls this feature 'the other half'. Essentially, the removable covers which come in a number of different colours each have an NFC chip which stores information. When attached to the phone, the case dictates things like the wallpaper and even personal settings.
Right now it will be very early to know how the phone worked in the market. But the company has full support for this smartphone. The phone is "Android app compliant" which indicates that it will be capable of running Android apps though it's not clear at this stage if it will directly support them or require developers to port them similar to how they work with BlackBerry 10.
Sailfish OS devices will be able to download and run thousands of Android apps, the company claims, but they won't do it from the Google Play store. Instead, Jolla phones will ship with the alternative Yandex.Store, which currently hosts more than 85,000 apps.
Cheers!!!
