Amazon Launches "Amazon.in" For Indian Store

After the launch of Junglee.com in India in February 2012 Amazon.com has announced Amazon.in which will be officially launched for Indian users. While junglee.com is a product aggregator and directs buyers to the seller's website, whereas, Amazon.in is the ecommerce giant's own marketplace for India.


India is the tenth country where Amazon Marketplace is available. The service is a central point from which independent retailers can sell a range of goods and products from third parties using the ‘marketplace’ model that is also adopted by Japanese retailer Rakuten, among others.

What Amazon.in has in store:
Amazon.in will be directly competing with Indian ecommerce giants like Flipkart, HomeShop18 etc. The site says there are more than 7 million books to choose from. Currently, Amazon.in will have be having two categories - Books and Movies & TV. But the company said, additional categories will be added soon.

Delivery Option:
Amazon.in will be delivering the products to any location in India. It consists of two types of listing, “Fulfilled by Amazon” and third party vendors. In the first category, the products are directly provided by Amazon for which the shipping is free for these items, if the value is more than Rs. 499. And if your order is less than Rs. 499, you will be charged with 49 Rs. extra. But some limited time, delivery is FREE for all items Fulfilled by Amazon.


Whereas for the other category, third-party vendors the product can be sold by rates mentioned by the seller. Payment can be made using; Credit card, Debit card, Net banking, Cash on Delivery (COD).

Payment Option:
Currently, Amazon.in offers cash on delivery (COD) option, which is hugely popular and a bare essential for any online marketplace in India. Sadly, this is available only when goods are fulfilled by Amazon. In addition, the usual suspects like credit card, debit card and net banking are available. Also, it looks like Amazon India has entrusted Billdesk as the payment gateway.
