Disable or Enable USB Drives in Windows
USB drives has became a major part of our life. Obviously, security ahs also became a concren when it comes to sharing. Many times we feel very unsafe if other people are using our PC and starts copying your personal data or any such things which is only yours. Say, like you living with your friends. It is very common that your friends will come and use your PC and can copy many things which you dont want to be public. Many time people have face the nuisance of unauthorized media such as photos, music, movies, etc. which is being transfered by USB. Your confidential stuff doesn't remain confidential anymore. Therefor many people, like me wants to restrict their computer form being access by any kind of USB drives. Windows 7 doesn't offer any option to write protect or disable USB drives.
But Phrozen Safe USB does this for us. Phrozen Safe USB is a lightweight tool that you can use to control your USB device status. You can use Phrozen Safe USB to make all the connected USB devices fully operational, deactivate them or enable the read-only mode, which means that you will not be able to modify their content.
The Phrozen Safe USB is set it in three different modes.
Lets see how this application works:
1. Download and install Phrozen Safe USB from here.
2. Once installed run it on your PC.
3. You will see a small window with a USB Status mode & one check box.
4. Click on the drop down button and you will see 3 different options.
This means that any USB drive can be conected to your PC and can perform all types of operation like write, read and delete the content stored in the drive.
This means that the connected device can be used to read any stored content, but is write protected. A good way to protect the data from being copied.
This means that any USB device connected to the PC won’t be recognized. But can keep USB mouse or keyboard operational.
Note: This effect will be applied to the devices which are connected after installing this application. The devices whose drivers are already installed cannot be disabled.
6. When closed, the application is minimized to the System tray. You can also change the modes from the icon in the system tray
I also observed one thing, after selecting any of the mode, the application still works if you quit the application from the system tray.

- Fully Operational Mode (FOM): USB Storage devices can be used normally (you can copy, modify, move or delete files).
- Read Only Mode (ROM): You only can read its contents. Therefore no virus could copy itself to your computer to spread. Other cannot intentionally try damage, delete or modify the contents on your computer.
- Disabled Mode: In this mode you are not able to see USB Storage devices anymore. It is in stealth mode. In this instance you don’t want anybody to export data or to import harmful content from your computer to USB Key.
