Recover Files From "Windows.old" Folder In Windows 8

Many people has upgraded their Windows OS from 7 to 8. And why they not, coz Windows 8 provides great features and option when compare to any Windows version. But while this transformation of Windows 7 to Windows 8, you might have seen a folder name Windows.old. This folder is stored in the same drive where the Windows 8 is installed.


Now what is this Windows.old folder? This is a folder which contains all the files from your previous version of Windows. While upgrading to Windows 8 if you choose not to keep your files, then they will be temporarily stored in  windows.old folder. But if your have formatted your drive before installation, you wont find any files in windows.old. Now if at any point you decided to recover some files or need some files, you can get them back. Ofcourse, if you don't want any files back in future, you can delete the windows.old folder anytime you want.

Automatically retrieve your files from windows.old:

Windows provides a troubleshooter that automatically retrieves your personal files from the windows.old folder and copies them back to their original locations. This troubleshooter works in all language.


Run the Recover Personal Files troubleshooter.

Manually retrieve your files from windows.old:

1. Search "Computer" in your search box.

2. Open the drive on which the Windows is installed.

3. Double click/tap on Windows.old folder.

4. Double click/tap on "Users" folder.

5. Double click/tap on your user name.

6. Open the folders that contain the files you want to retrieve.

7. Copy and paste the files that you want from each folder to a folder in Windows 8.

8. Repeat steps 5-7 for each user account on your computer.

That's it. This is how you can retrieve your files from windows.old folder. When you think that you are done with copying all your necessary files and folders you can remove the windows.old folder to save space. Coz, it takes around 2 GB of space in your PC.

  1. I used the Recover personal files troubleshooter tool and I get the next message:

    User account already recovered

    The personal files for the user account [AccountName] have already been recovered. Please select another user account.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Is there any way to mark that user account in the Windows.old folder as not recovered so I can use the tool?
