Times of India launches Alive Augmented Reality News app

You never know where technology can lead you in near future. Think of a image, scan it using your android phone and the image becomes live. It gets converted into video. Its like image becoming video. The technology in our hands-whether cell phone or tablet-has changed the way we consume information and enjoy our entertainment. Scanning is one such application that can be used for various purposes. One such example is, scan a QR code-those black and white squares-in newspaper ads and on posters to receive discount coupons on your phone that can be redeemed at the mall. Making this possible is a mishmash of technologies, including the digital camera on your phone, global positioning service (GPS), high-speed 3G networks, complex algorithms and rich web-based multimedia content.

The Times of India Group, has launched an Augmented Reality application, known as Times Alive. Alive is a revolutionary image recognition Augmented Reality application that gives the brands an opportunity to engage with their customers by diminishing the thin line between the virtual and the real world, thereby, giving the customers a captivating experience that stays in their mind for long. In other words, Alive allows readers of the newspaper to interact with a print medium, and get access to rich media content, such as videos, photos, and polls. The application efficaciously transforms text, image, symbols, patterns or objects into a virtual experience and instantaneous content which can range from gaming, social media, WAP pages, AV clip, mobile commerce etc.

This app is available for Android, iPhone, BlackBerry and Nokia Symbian Smartphones and would offer a captivating experience for the users than just reading a newspaper. The app has crossed 250,000 downloads on the launch day, leading to 300,000 augmentation views on a single day.

Features of Alive app:
  • Transforms text, image, symbols, patterns or objects into a virtual experience
  • View videos and picture gallery of the actual news items in the newspaper
  • Voice your opinion immediately and make the newspaper more interactive;
  • Share the newspaper news item on the go
  • View history of the news items you have viewed
  • Save the multimedia content for future viewing
How to use it:

1. Download and install the app in your phone.

2. Look for the picture/news article containing Alive logo.

3. Open your Alive app, and hold it up in camera mode to the image/text containing the alive logo.

4. Fill the screen with as much of the image as possible – whether an ad, article, photo, label or logo.

5. Hold still, tap to focus if required and enjoy!

You can also use the flash feature (works only on supported devices) of the bulb in the corner of the screen to open the flashlight if you are in a poorly lit area. For blackberry and Symbian you need to go to options and then capture the image rather than just holding the phone over the image.

As of now Alive is available only on Android v 2.3 and above, IOS 4.3 and above, Blackberry OS 6.0 and above and select phones in Symbian S60v3 and S60v5.
