Ways to Use/Write New Indian Rupee Symbol In Documents
I know that this post should be written very early.. buts its OK.. Its never late.
As we all know that the Indian Government has came up with new Rupee symbol. Most of the countries have distinct identification symbol for thier currency, like Dollar $ Euro €, etc. But their was no officical symbol for Indian Rupee. Yes, Rs. are commonly used to represent Indian Rupee, but its not an official currency sign. Therefore, the Indian government had announced an contest to pick up a sign that will represent the curreny of India.
Many symbols came up to be choosen one. The Government of India has choosed 5 symbols out of which one will represent the Rupee symbol. And atlast on 15th July, they came up with a symbol "₹".
Now as this symbol was recently invented, many of us was not knowing of how to use it in MS Word or Excel or Notepad. Therefore an new unicode standard ahs been updated using which we can be able to write this symbol. Now we wont't go into much technical part of what and how this unicode was created.
There are two methods to use this "₹" symbol in Word or any other document.
Method 1:
Microsoft has updated their font list with Windows to include the new Rupee symbol. So we are now able to use this symbol with some of the fonts, like Arial, Tahoma, Segoe UI, MS Outlook, etc. It has some limitations over the fonts.
For that we need to update our Windows Font directory by installing "kb2496898 hotfix" wich is available for both Vista and 7. Once this is installed it will update some of the fonts.
Follow steps below:
1. Install kb2496898 hotfix from here.
2. Scroll down and select the appropriate update, depending upon your OS.
3. Select your update package and click on Download.
4. Next you will be require to do the Validation. Click on Continue.
5. Next you will see a "Begin Genuine Windows Validation". Click on the Continue button Step 1.
6. A file name "GenuineCheck.exe" will be downloaded. Run this file and you will see a validation code. Enter that Validation code the text box displayed in Step 2. and click on Validate button.
7. Click on the Download button in the next screen in the Quick Detail section.
8. Install the file. It may ask you to restart.
Now once the file is installed. launch MS Word and change the font to Arial or Tahoma. Then type 20B9 followed by Alt-x. You will see that the string 20B9 will be converted into the new Rupee Symbol.
In this way you can use the new Rupee Symbol.
Method 2:
Foradian Technologies, a Manglore based Company, has worked on this font and made the rupee symbol available for blogs, forums, sites. This first font was developed on 16th July, the very next day the new Rupee Symbol was invented.
1. Download the "Rupee Foradian.ttf" from here.
2. Copy the file to C:\Windows\Fonts directory.(for Windows XP users)
3. Right-click the file and choose “Install”. (for Windows 7/Vista users)
4. Open MS Word and select the font "Rupee Foradian".
