Google Announces Android 4.2

Hurricane Sandy tried to delay the launch of the Android 4.2 but Google still went ahead and revealed the release of Android 4.2, an update to Jelly Bean. Its been said that the new update will bring new camera app, typing improvement and other upgrades to the Jelly Bean. Also three new of Nexus has been launched – small, medium and large – Android 4.2 also got a look-in, “a new flavor” of Jelly Bean, which includes the latest version of Google Now, in addition to a slew of other new features.


Google will be launching Android 4.2 as the default operating system in their new first-party Nexus branded devices that will be released mid-November. Currently no release date has been announced by Google.

Talking about the features which are preloaded into the new Nexus devices along with Android 4.2 are as follows:
  • Gestural typing a la Swype.
  • Support for Miracast wireless displays, which allows video content to be broadcast to TVs that support this Wi-Fi based standard. Note: Samsung's Galaxy S III and LG's Optimus G are two other phones that have Miracast support.
  • Photo Sphere: a camera software app that allows automatic creation of 360-degree panoramas.
  • Multiple users: A given device (such as the Nexus 10 tablet described below) can be set up to work with more than one user, and can be switched between them at the lock screen in much the same manner as a Windows desktop.
  • Beam, which allows NFC-equipped Android smartphones to exchange data by simply being tapped back to back.
  • Improvements for visually-impaired users.
  • Various under-the-hood performance enhancements.
Google Now:
Google Now is its “intelligent personal assistant” for Android, an app that uses a natural-language UI to answer questions, make recommendations, and perform other key actions. It was first included in the previous version of Jelly Bean (4.1), and as expected continues with the latest line of Nexus devices (small, medium and large). The service offers more personal information like flight information or tracking packages. It will also show restaurant reservations, events, and hotel reservations. With events, it will show you estimated traffic and send you a notification on when to leave in order to arrive on time.

Google Search and Knowledge Graph:
The search feature gets an update by powering Google Search with the Knowledge Graph so you get better answers from your searches. In short you Google search becomes more correct with nice features.

Photo Sphere:
You can call it an another word for panoramic pictures. Using this app you can create “spheres” of images that look like Street View images that combine pictures into a 360 degree image. You can upload and share these images on Google Maps and Google+.


In simple words, you can snap photos in any direction and piece them together into “photo spheres” that put you inside the scene.

Gesture Typing:
The default keyboard has been easy to use and Android 4.2 adds Gesture Typing, which lets users glide their finger over the letters to type on the keyboard. It automatically adds spaces between the words.


This keyboard can also predict the next word. It works same as similar to SwiftKey and Swipe.

Mutiple google accounts on one device:
The latest version of Jelly Bean also lets people add multiple users and switch between them instantly from the lockscreen, similar to how you would on a Windows PC. But currently this feature has been added into the tablets only.

Wireless Sharing:
You can now share your content on your device to a HDMI-enabled TV via a wireless display adapter. To enable this, you’ll need to connect a wireless display adapter to an HDMI-enabled TV, which mirrors what’s on your screen.

Daydream:
Its an new type of screensaver. This lets you show photos or receive feeds from Google Currents. This can also be view when your device is idle.

Notification Option:
You will be able to more actions like responding to misses calls, calender events and more. You just need to swipe down from the top of the screen to see all your notifications in a single place.

Lock screen Widgets:
You can now place widgets on your lock screen for quick access without unlocking your phone to use them.

Quick Settings:
Using multi-touch, swiping with two fingers will open a settings menu so you can adjust common options like brightness or checking the battery level.

Google Play Music Explorer:
The Google Play app on Android 4.2 will offer a music discovery option for users.

Gmail:
Gmail will auto-format messages in horizontal views and start pinch-to-zoom in emails.

Jelly Bean now supports the sharing of photos, videos, contacts, web pages, YouTube videos, directions and apps using NFC capabilities. Accessibility options have also been improved for visually impaired users. Android 4.2 is a small update that adds more functionality to the existing OS.
